Hi there,

I have Arcserve V11.1 with a Compaq SSL2020 Tape Library, the library is connected to a seperate scsi card (adaptec 29320 U320)

During backups I sometimes get these errors and the backup fails. The tape appears to be unreadable but performing an inventory corrects this error.

Lets play what if.

If the tape drive had a valid UDE while trying to write to tape that tape could be marked as offline, unreadable or what ever. Then you inventory the tape and it is back. Well the inventory only reads the tape header. So it is very possible that when the drive reaches the same spot on tape it will get the same error. It is also possible that it will not and that is because most drives make off back blocks on tape.

Check the tape log, it should contain the error and provide us with details to see just what happened.

It is also advisable to ck to see if the brand tapes used is on HP's recommended list.

Also keep in mind that almost all tapes have a waranty for a free replacement.
