I have a managed client that continually logs this message "update to computer xxxx of virus definiton file xxxx failed. Status FFFFFFFF" and I canna find any info on this particular error.

Sounds like your client is receiving Live updates from symantics rather than your server. Your client does not sufficent rights to have live update therfore the update fails. Point client back to server as server should only receiving live updates.

You might want to manually make sure your client is managed. Document ID:2000040312351348 at Symantec's site gives detailed directions on how to do it.
