I installed exch2k3 on a win2k3 server. I'm able to add users and it do give me the option to setup a mailbox for the users, but when I try setting up the mailbox in outlook 2k3 i get an error message stating" The name could not be resolved. The name could not be matched to a name in the address list." I went into Exchange System Manager to look at the mailbox created and the only ones listed are SMTP, system attendant and systemmailbox. Help me Please.

Thanks in advance;

Kirk

Are you going into the User Properties in AD and checking to see if the email address is there?

Yes I did, and they are there. Just no mailbox was created.

Don't expect to find a mailbox. The mailbox is not instanced until the user logs onto it via outlook, or a message is delivered to it. This is by design.

Use ADSIEDIT to check and see if the RUS has stamped the user yet. This is likely your problem.

I thought that was the case. I tried creating my account in outlook but is states that the username cannot be resolved. So I tried sending an email to my email address. Went into the system manager and looked in the queue, I can see the message sitting in the queue, but I later receive an email from the sending account stating that the message delivery was delayed. It seems as if the system is trying to deliver the message but do not have a mailbox to deliver it to.

Check the properties of the user. Most likely it has not yet been stamped by the RUS.

Try saving the name in Outlook WITHOUT trying to resolve it.
I have had situations where Mail will NOT resolve the name on setup -- but will when I use Outlook.

The issue with checkname typically involves a migration scenario using exmerge. In that case, the client profile still has a reference to the user's contact folder on the old server and check name fails. You remove and readd the outlook address book service, either manually or by manipulating the client profile through the registry, to populate the profile with a reference to the new contacts folder.

Thank you everyone for you support, but none of your recommendations worked. I went ahead earlier and started to reformat and will reload both the OS and Exchange will see if the problem continues.

Thanks again,

Kirk

Although you did not get root cause, sometimes that's the quickest route. In cluster there's a saying, "When in doubt kick it out". Whan a node fails, often the fastest approach to recovery is to evict it from the cluster and rebuild the node.

Good luck.
