I have a 120gb Western Digital external HDD for use specifically for video avi files and Magix MEP2005 video editing.

Recently, this drive has become unstable and whilst it will allow access to copy files any resave or updates are lost because the drive is unable to save the Master file table.

I have found & read a few snippets on the MS support site but cannot see if there is a way to correct the $MfT file, my understanding is that this is supposed to rebuild itself when the drive is first started.

Any suggestions welcomed, I am in the process of getting another 300gb HDD to transfer the files across becuase I do not want to lose them.

Binnit,
How full is the drive?

Also, have you tried running disk cleanup, disk check and defrag?

What is the status of quota management for that drive?

The drive was pretty much full and may have encrouched on to the MfT causing this problem to occur, I have since deleted some of the files in order to create space now its about 70% full

The problems first started when trying to defrag, I then ran cleanup & check disk which could not complete phase 4.

Binnit,
At this point I would focus on securing the data off this drive and on to your 300gig. Your problems may be more than just the master file table as the drive may have developed physical sector damage as well.

After the data transfer, you should at least re-partition,format and run all 5 phases of diskcheck to verify the drives integrity.

This is what I would do.

I am refering to the "problem drive" and if you are planning future use for it.

Amazon have confirmed posting the new drive, I have not since restarted the drive and will attempt to copy data before anything doing anything else.

I will reformat and run all standard checls thereafter but will remain suspicious with this drive until it convinces me otherwise!

Thanks for your posts. will update later.
