After I've formatted & installed XP, I'm unable to run Windows update. When I hit the URL, it says there are no files to update. This makes no sense because I know there are tons of hotfixes, Media Player 9.0, SP1, etc...anyone know a solution to this fix? thank you.

Nothing...I've viewed the INSTALL HISTORY - shows nothing updated, tried PERSONALIZE update, won't let me. Here is the message I receive.

"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page."

I search for that message in google then tried few things like regedit, remove windows update folder, wutemp, etc...nothing.

Thanks for your 2 cents though... :)

I'm already running 6.0.26 but let me give that shot.

Unregister old control:

Go to Start > run

Type: "regsvr32 /u C:\WINNT\System32\IUCTL.dll" (Without Quotes. You should get a unregistered successfully message)

Find your old site controls:

Go to Start > Search

Type "IUCTL.DLL" (Without Quotes)

Select the Search button.

Next Search and delete the IUEngine.dll file (Same as above).

Please delete any trace of the files IUCTL.DLL and IUENGINE.DLL

Reboot and try to access Windows Update again.

If no joy,

Empty the hidden directory c:\WUTemp. Try again. If that doesn't work...

Type the following URL in Internet Explorer

It will popup a dialog asking you to save iuctl.cab. Click on Save button.

Save iuctl.cab on your machine and extract its contents into a folder.

Once you extract you will have the following files:

iuctl.dll

iuengine.dll

iuctl.inf

Right click on iuctl.inf and select install. This will install the new iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll.

Open IE, clear out temporary internet files, and try again...

bcastner: that didn't work either. weird. I ran iuctl.inf w/out any issues but still has the same message of nothing to be updated.

Something to check:

Has Service Pack 1 been removed either through System
Restore or by reinstalling Windows XP into the same directory ?
IF yes --
" The value for the CSDVersion in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
needs to be changed to 0. If you are comfortable editing the registry,
follow the instructions below.
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. In the Open box type regedit and click "OK."
3. Browse in the left frame to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
4. In the right frame you will see the key CSDVersion. Double click
this key.
5. Change the value to 0 and click "OK."
6. Restart the computer. "

bcastner: no need to activate license just to run Windows update but thanks. Also, SP1 was never installed since this was a fresh XP PRo install and NEVER had problems before. This was installed on a Dell Inspiron 8500. I hate work around but due to time limit, I'm just going to "ghost" from a previous 8500 image. Thanks for your input guys.
