A little bit of advice would be appreciated....

W2K-Server: I am unable to restart any services from the services panel. In the beginning it was only the print spooler that was a problem but now everything seems to be going. (It hangs the services while trying to stop/start).

Also I can't set them to manual or auto start and had to do it in the registry and then restart the server for the changes to take effect. The server works fine and that's the only problem I am having.

(I usually restarted the print spool service with batch file overnight due to the fact that we print a lot and I noticed that the spool runs away with ram and cpu usage, but now I have to restart the server due to the fact that I am unable to stop/start the spooler)

Any advice would be great...Thanx

I've seen this problem with PCL 6 drivers for HP printers. For some reason, the drivers don't install properly and once the spooler is stuck, the service panel stops responding.

Reboot worked, but problem would return eventually. I ended up using good old PCL 5e drivers and getting rid of the PCL6.

Since then, the drivers for PCL6 have improved, but I still try to avoid them... but that's just me.

HI.

I agree with the above post.

In addition, my rule for servers is - Use ONLY "Local Printer", and never use a "Network Printer" on the server.

All network printers which are installed on the server should be configured as "Local" with a "Local Port" pointing to UNC of the actual location. (Or TCPIP port if applicable, but *NOT* a LANMAN port).
