Unable to resolve hostname... 1

I have a Netgear MR314 giving 2 laptops access to the Web. The laptops can ping each other using IP addresses but not by hostname. The wierd thing is this worked a week ago and I've not changed any network settings. Any thoughts? Thx.

If your using Windows machines, then it can take them up to two hours to see each other. It's the Computer Browser service that is in charge of this. Make sure the services are operational on both computers and that your TCP/IP settings are using NetBios over TCP/IP.

If all this checks out, the computers should eventually see each other.

It could be that you may need to enter the machine names manually in the HOSTS file.

The hosts file is located at:-

winnt\system32\drivers\etc

Add the names and IP addresses and it should work fine.

I made sure that Netbios over TCP/IP is set and things seem to be operational again. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

I went to a DOS command line and did a netview and I got the error that 'netview' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. What am I doing wrong?
