Unable to remove or update Java 1

I received an error (don't remember exactly what, but it aborted the install) while trying to update to the latest version of Java. Now I get "Fatal error during installation." - no error number or other message, while trying to uninstall Java 6 Update 11 (only level installed). I get "Installation Failed" when attempting to install Java 6 Update 12, with the explanation of

The wizard was interrupted before Java(TM)6 Update 12 could be completely installed. To complete installation at another time, please run setup again.

I am unable to either uninstall or install Java now and all programs that use Java indicate it is not installed. Any ideas as to how to get past this problem?

Have you tried System Restore back to before the update?

Do you have a Backup regime in place?

Have a look at some third party uninstallers if Add or Remove fails you.

Thanks Linney, the cleanup utility did the trick. I am back in operation again.
