we installed new windows 2003 server with exchange 2003 and followed the steps to migrate from our 2000 exchange server.

now I am getting ready to remove exchange 2000 but keep running into this error:

"component microsoft exchange messaging and collaboration services cannot be assigned the action remove becuase one or more users currently use a mailbox store on this server"

the only mailboxes I see are the two system mailboxes, system attendant mailbox, and the smtp server name mailbox (which you are supposed to leave).

I then followed this from Ms Exchange Blog:
1. Run ADUC.
2. Right-click your domain at the top, and choose Find.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then choose User from the Field button.
4. From the list of attributes displayed, choose Exchange Home Server.
5. Set the Condition field to Ends With and then type your Exchange server name into the Value field. Click Add to add this value.
6. Now click the Find button, and hopefully you'll see the troublesome user listed in the results window. You should then be able to remove the Exchange attributes from these user accounts and proceed with the uninstall.

what that returns is the two system mailboxes, and administrator (built in account for administrating computer\domain)

my only option for the administrator account is to "remove exchange attribute".

am I correct in assuming this is the mailbox that is keeping me from uninstalling 2000? and if so, I should remove the exchange attribute for this mailbox?

You should be able to move that mailbox. It needs to be moved or removed before the setup will allow you to continue.

If for some reason it's not letting you move it, I'd exmerge the contents to a .pst file, then kill the mailbox. Remove Exchange 2000 and then re-mailbox enable the account and exmerge the data back into it.
