Unable to read/write image file, delete okay 1

I have used DriveImage 6 to image my C: partition and save the image onto my D: partition. They are on separate drives. Once that is done, I cannot use ImageExplorer to look at the image or restore individual files. The image is on a NTFS formatted partition. Rebooting the system does not make any difference. I can delete the image file(s) without problem. How can I get the images freed or unlocked? I have not tried to use BartPE to write them to CD/DVD, but otherwise I know of no way to access them. This is with XP Pro with SP3. Any ideas? Thanks..

Is this a trial version or a fully licensed version?

Are you an Administrator?

Are there any updates available for your Imaging program?

The fact that your user can delete the image file sort of knocks out the usual problem of it being a permissions problem, still you may want to look at that.

Something maybe locking the file? See if stopping various processes from running unlocks the file.

Do you have any other weird backup programs such as "Go Back" or "Norton Protect" etc? Things like ALCOHOL 120% too have done funny things, you get the picture?


Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

The problem is ownership. The image program runs from a booted DOS image which contains NTFS read/write support. When XP boots backup with the default user, the owner of the image file(s) is set to administrator and on the permissions tab, it lists SYSTEM as being the user with full control. The default user only has read and change permissions authority. I am unable to add the default user to a SYSTEM group, so I must manually go through the administrator tools to change the permissions owner, or add the default user as another ID to the permissions tab with full control authorization. Is there any way to change the permissions for the file(s) from a command prompt? I am trying to automat the backup proceedure to allow the backup images to be controlled and monitored without user intervention unless something went wrong. If I change the file system to a FAT32 format, all works okay, but the partition size is too small for what I need. Thanks for any suggestions.

To answer some of your comments - the XP system and the Drive Image program are fully licensed and have all updates that I am aware of. Powerquest no longer is around and so I know of no way to get any updates (if they exist) to Drive Image 6 (2002).

Everything is being run with administrator privilege.

Same failure exists when run in Safe Mode.

Can you just clarify that the Permissions problem is occurring when you are in Windows and not some version of MS-DOS?

This will lead you into Cacls and its use.

Have a look at a Command Prompt (Windows) when you type runas /?


Would it work to add relevant users to the Backup Operators Group?
