Help! I can attach to the network, ping any address, but when I try to send a message, no luck. I can't ping the name of the exchange server. I've put the names/ips in the lmhosts file, but no joy. I'm using Win98, I did get it to work using w2k, by importing the lmhosts file. Does 98 do that also?

Thanks!

the line in the lmhosts file should look like this
IPOFSERVER SERVERNAME #PRE #DOM:DOMAINNAME #Mail Server

also make sure it has no extension if you just edited the current file on WIN98 the it may have a .sam extension. One more thing make sure the lmhosts file is located in the WINDOWS folder.

In Win98 we use the hosts file instead of the lmhosts, and Jason is right, you probably edited and used the ".sam" (sample) file. To make sure that does not happen, open the file explorer,Go to view>folder options>view>Hide file extensions for known file types should be NOT checked, otherwise "hosts.sam" just looks like "hosts" Click.

To Jasonboyes and Click. Thanks! this worked great. Just goes to show though I'm 48, I can still learn.
