I have a user who is currently unable to:
1. Open an attachment, regardless of extension.
2. Use QuickView to open an attachment.
3. Save the attachment, regardless of extension.
4. Attach a file to a new message.

Here is the error message we get when trying to save an attachment:

"Cannot save the attachment. Can't create file: <filename>. Right-click the folder you want to create the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your permissions for the folder."

We get similiar messages when trying to open an attacment, use Quick View, or attach a file in a new message.

This is Windows 98 using shared desktop, so profiles shouldn't be an issue. I've tried uninstall/reinstall of Outlook 2000, creating a new Outlook 2000 profile, reinstall/repair of Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2.

Originally, he was unable to create new messages too. This was corrected when I created a new profile for him to use.

thanks

Just a guess here, but I'd first try deleting the contents of the C:\Windows\Temp folder and reboot.

Does this pc run on policies - locked down in any way? How much hard drive free space left? Part of a LAN/WAN? ~cdogg

I've tried creating a new C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory and a C:\TEMP directory ( SET TEMP = C:\TEMP ). Neither helped. The PC is not locked down in anyway and we do not use policies. Plenty of disk space. We are on a LAN/WAN and the Exchange server is across the WAN. However, he has no problem using another machine with Outlook 2000.

The security updates for Outlook 2000 have never been applied. I uninstalled Outlook, and reinstalled it. He is on version 9.0.0.3821.

This is a guess as well. Try replacing the frmcache.dat file with a copy of the file from another machine where it does work or from the original installation source. joegz

I tried deleting the frmcache.dat early on. I replaced the frmcache.dat file with on from a working system. No change.

Thanks!

OK...one more guess. Look at HKEY_CU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders look at the entry for Personal. This is the directory where attachments should be saved to or at least the directory where it will start from. joegz

I mentioned the registry entry issue to the user. I said its possible that Outlook may be looking towards a different directory than what is currently on his C:\ drive. He recalled using a virtual drive, or RAMdisk, awhile back that was mapped as R:\. He did a search for R:\temp and found the following:

Current_user/software/microsoft/office/Outlook/security!
He changed the R:\Temp to C:\temp and all works.

Thanks for your help!!!!!

FYI-

Checking the key you listed earlier, we found more references to R:\Temp. We are in the process of cleaning this up. Thanks again.

joegz always seems to have the answer...nice job! [thumbsup2] ~cdogg
