I downloaded Adobe Reader, but was unable to install it.
I get an error message stating..."Operating System Not Supported." I have Windows 98 SE... My firewall was off
during the download and install.
Oh yeah, that's right. I forgot that Win98SE was on that list of approved OS's. My bad!
OK. First go ahead and right-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and select "Properties". Make sure it actually states Second Edition 4.10.2222 A.
Next, follow these instructions listed from Adobe's support site:
_______________________________________________________________
Because device drivers can interfere with opening or installing files, restart Windows in a simplified mode to disable the device drivers, and then install Adobe Reader.
To start Windows in a simplified mode:
1. Choose Start > Run.
2. Type msconfig in the Open text box, and then click OK.
3. Click the General tab to start the System Configuration Utility.
4. Select Diagnostic Startup - Interactively Load Device Drivers And Software, and then click Apply.
5. Click OK, and then click Yes in the Systems Settings Change dialog box to restart Windows in Safe mode:
6. Select option 3, Safe Mode, from the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu, and then press Enter

Yankees23,
As described in my post, the suggestion to restart in safe mode helps to ensure that there aren't any conflicting device or software drivers running in the background. There might be one in particular causing the Adobe's installer to think you've got an older version of Windows, even though you have 98SE.
It's real simple. Just use the link that Jontmke posted above and select the Win98SE download. DO NOT check the option to use the Adobe Download Manager.
After the download finishes, restart in safe mode using the directions above and run the file you downloaded in regular mode.

Yankees23,
In my first post, I had asked that you do this first:
"OK. First go ahead and right-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and select "Properties". Make sure it actually states Second Edition 4.10.2222 A"
You can also go to Start -> Run, type dxdiag and hit OK. The next screen that appears should give you some of the same information.
Did you verify that your system properties reports Second Edition? If not, then either you don't have Second Edition installed, or something is corrupted in your registry. Either way, you're probably looking at a reinstall of Windows.

However, during install or boot up, I can't remember
where, I read from the screen that it was Windows 98 SE.
If possible I will download Abode Reader 5.5. rather
than re-install windows. I have had this OS for 3 1/2
years and re-installed about 3 times. It is time consuming,
to say the least.
Yes, actually I quoted the wrong version above. It's version 5.05 which will work with your version of Windows.
In the future, you should rely only on what you see in the system properties (which can be wrong, but not usually) or from the DirectX Diagnostics utility. The screen shown at startup is merely an image and pulls nothing from the system to verify anything.

I had exactly this problem with the Adobe Acrobat 6.0 upgrade. I contacted Adobe Tech Support and they said it only works with Win2000 or later.
I told them I only have Win98SE and DO NOT want to upgrade, and they refused to give me a refund and suggested that I should sell the upgrade on eBay as a NEW upgrade, since I had not (could not) register it.
What a bummer, I have ALL the latest Adobe products, Photoshop, Pagemaker, etc., but will now think twice before I upgrade and will try to find alternative products!
To kaiserdr: It is a little unfair to criticise Adobe for not supporting a five year old OS. Sooner or later nothing will be made to run on 98. Eventually everyone will have to upgrade.
What I find ironic is that you paid for the Adobe upgrade but have not gotten the Windows upgrade? The lowest price I found for that is $100, just about the same as XP. I know what you're thinking, I was the same as you, but XP is a much better OS. In the year and a half I have owned it I got the BSOD ONCE! I could never say that with 98.
Sorry for the rant It is not intended as a flame.
