Unable to Delete or Purge from MS Outlook

I use the most version of MS Outlook. Right now, I'm unable to delete emails from my Inbox for automatic transfer into my Deleted Items folder. In fact, the "Delete" pull-down command is no longer highlighted.

Also, I can no longer purge emails from the Deleted Items folder. Here too the pull-down command is no longer highlighted.

Believe me, these commands were working fine for almost 2 years -- until, one day, they just gave up the ship.

Any suggestions on how to correct?
