Unable to delete ldb and mdb. Unable to save changes in mdb

In Windows Explorer, I see that there is an associated .ldb file with my .mdb database. I usually see the .ldb file only when there was some kind of error while I had the .mdb open and was "kicked out". In order to get rid of the .ldb files, usually I open the .mdb and exit properly (via File>Exit).

However, that is not working for me in this case. I am the only user of this DB and do NOT currently have it opened. Here are my problems:
1) I try to open the .mdb from Windows Explorer, but am unable to. Nothing happens. In order to open the DB, I must open Access first, then open the mdb. When making any changes to modules, I get this message:
Microsoft Office Access can't save design changes or save to a new database object because another user has the file open. To save your design changes or to save to a new object, you must have exclusive access to the file.

2) After exiting the DB now, I just want to delete both the .ldb and the .mdb, but get this message:
Cannot delete ----: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

Any help/tips would be GREATLY appreciated!

Can you compact and repair? Tools/database utilities
if that does'nt work try opening a new db and importing all the Tables Queries forms etc

Here's the message I get when attempting to "Compact and Repair":

You attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively by user '---' on machine '---_XP'. Try again when the database is available.

The user name in the message is my name.

The mdb contains only one module, which I can easily copy and paste into a new mdb. But I don't want the old mdb lying around -- I want to get rid of it all together.

Hi

Is the file on a Server?

It appears the Server "Thinks" the file is open when it is not (maybe as the result of a system crash or failure), try closing down the server and bring it back up

Ken,

These files are all on my local drive.

Last night, I shut off the PC and restarted again this morning. Now the .ldb files are gone. I guess restarting the PC was the equivalent as restarting the server.
