I maintain the DNS server used by my office and have run into a problem that I cannot seem to find an answer for.

To our forward lookup zone (mnea.org), I need to add
I am unable to add the name as a host since Windows 2000 will not allow any . (periods) to be put in the name. I am able to add ecomm.mnea.org and without any problems.

I have also tried adding a CNAME, but recieve the following message.

The DNS name contains records that are incompatible with the CNAME record.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure this is a nuance of DNS that I have missed.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

You could either create a new Lookup Zone on your DNS server called ecomm.mnea.org, and within that a new host name for
Or you can configure you DNS to point to the IIS server, but use host headers on the pages to identify the page.
See this article on Host Headers for more information.

Thanks for your help. Creating a new zone is something I had not thought of and seems like it might be the easiest solution.

Thanks again,
