Hi

Weird problem this that is doing my head in.

XP Pro system is part of a small (3 pc) network connected to a Win2k Server running Active Directory. One account is used on all the pc's and all bar the XP Pro system funtion normally.

I can logon to the XP system using the account and all appears ok, except that is requires a password to access a shared folder. The main problem was found when I wanted to change the computer name. Upon entering all relevant fields, an error appeared: "Windows cannot obtain the domain controller for your computer network. (WSAStartup cannot function at this time because the underlying system it uses to provide network services is currently unavailable.). Group policy processing aborted."

I checked through the logs and found "Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to contact the active directory. (WSAStartup cannot function at this time because the underlying system it uses to provide network services is currently unavailable.)

I have checked serives and reinstalled networking but to no avail, any help would be most appreciated.

Richard.

I find the quickest way to rename a PC on AD is to make the PC part of a work group, change the name, then run network identification.

The 2nd part of your question regarding certificates reminds me of a SP1 bug on domains. If you have installed SP1 then either remove it, or or have to set some policy in security on the server. I can't remember exactly what I did since it was a long time ago, but doing a search should find the bug. It was documents in the xp newsgroups under sp1 bugs. Tez

Backups are great but checking if you can restore is more fun.
