Some time ago a new DC was added to a domain and the FSMO roles swapped. Unfortunatly the old DC was removed from the Domain Controllers in active directory without demoting it. A further DC has been added to the domain. A problem has come to light with the DC with the FSMO roles. I am unable to alter the client licenses with a message refering to the original dumped server. The additional DC licensing can be altered. Any help to resolve this problem would be appreciated.

pytchley,

My understanding is that a License Server is not technically a FSMO role, although it can be deployed on the same server as that holding the FSMO roles. I believe that the Microsoft best practice is to have it on a member server that is not a DC (and thus has no FSMO roles).

Check out this MSKB article and please reply with the error text.
