Unable to catalog tapes

Hi
has anyone experienced this problem, that when I am trying to catalog my tapes I am only able to get about 1 gig out of a possible 35 gigs per tape...and it returns me an error "The data being read from the media is inconsistent" is there away to retrieve this data?
