I ran into this problem when I was installing Norton Av 2003 last week. Before I completed the installation the screen went black and I had to power off and then on to continue. But the boot process stopped when i got this error message:
" Msgsrv32 caused a general protection problem in module essolo.dev" Clicking Ignore did nothing. Clicking Shut Down shut the pc down but I have the same problem when I try to boot again. So I can't use the pc!

Can anyone PLEASE tell me how to go about fixing whatever it is that is going on? Thanks. ..... caprice

FWIMBW:

1. My pc is a Pentium III with 98 mB of Ram and lots of harddrive (of which 7+ gB is free). The OS is Windows 98 (not the SE version).

2. I <can> work the pc in the SafeMode. All my WORD files seem to be there and accessible. Word is still useable. But, of course, I have no working modem or printer in SafeMode.

3. My sound system is ESS (Solo?) version 2.1

4. It MAY be that I had not closed all my active programs when I was installing the Norton AV program. If I click C-A-D when the pc is in its stalled state (with the error message displayed) I see that 3 programs are shown as active: something called Ghost????, a Norton program, and a third I can't recall right now (I am away from the stalled pc) but I can provide this info if you think it is relevant.

I would try restoring the registry to the last succesfull boot. Give it a shot.

For every problem there is a solution, for every solution there is a tech behind it.

that is - boot to a command prompt and run scanreg.
