Greetings. I am currently running Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Active Directory and DNS. I have built out a second PC with Advanced Server, and am now trying to run dcpromo to add the new server to the domain. Each time I attempt to do so, I receive the error: "An AD controller for the domain [my domain name] could not be contacted." I can ping the server, I can ping the fully qualified domain name, and I was even successful in adding the new computer to the domain. Obviously, there is not a network problem preventing me from reaching the existing domain controller. I checked with Microsoft KBase, and it recommedned to ensure the SYSVOL was shared appropriately on the DC, which it is. Any thoughts? Thank you!

the IP config of your new server must be configured to use the primary server as its primary DNS server
you must have domain admin rights to add the new DC

are you already logging on to the domain (not locally)? ---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work

I agree, Definitely make sure you are using a DNS Server in the same domain or dcpromo will fail every time.

Yes, the IP config of my new server is configured to use the primary server as its primary DNS server. In addition, I am able to ping mydomain.com without the server name. I am also logging in to the domain as a Domain Admin. Thanks.

If the DNS is setup and it can find the server why not set a default gateway to the other server?
Also if it already part of the domain I would change it back to workgroup, then run DCPROMO.If it is going to be a child domain then nothing specific has to be done, but if it is going in as a new domain new tree existing forest there are other steps to do before running the promo.

When u running dcpromo and u r trying to connect to the parent domian make sure to use the NetBios name instead of the .com name For xample instead for using Mcse.com just use Mcse. By default Win2k uses Mcse.com so just delete .com

SORRY I REPLY IN FRENSH;
