i can connect to the internet and surf around just fine on my 56kmodem, but for some reason all microsoft websites refuse to load. hotmail, msn, microsoft.com, none of these work. even from within outlook express my hotmail account is not accessible. what the heck is going on? i know their servers aren't just down because other people are having no problems... darn hotmail.

First thing to try is go to a command prompt and type:
ping
Pinging is the simplest and most basic way to test if you can reach an address. Does this come back with responses or not?

POST MORE OS Info:
Win98 ? Win98 SE ? or..... arggh Win95 ?

What you probably have is an outdated version of
IE. Can you get to the Windows update page ?

Are you running some really outdated (garbage) Netscape ?

Post more info.

According to The Register - - MS Windows Update suffers multi-day outage (
Quote:-
Microsoft's Windows Update site has been experiencing severe problems in the past week, and numerous users have been unable to access the site. According to several people who've contacted The Register, problems began on Thursday and carried on through Friday. Over the weekend it does seem to have been possible to access the site, but they report that it was unreliable.
[snip]
According to a post from a Microsoft employee, Windows Update wasn't available through some ISPs' DNS servers, and he recommended switching DNS to 198.6.1.1 and 198.6.1.2. These are UU.NET DNS servers, which presumably could be guaranteed to have the right records for Windows Update on them.

So this could be your problem (i.e. your DNS servers have the wrong records). Depending on your technical expertese, you could try switching ... One by one, the penguins steal my sanity. X-)

Update:
Microsoft's problems with the Windows Update site, reported here yesterday, are more complex and widespread than first appeared, according to sources within the company. Users have been having sporadic problems accessing Windows Update for some days now, but according to one Microsoft support engineer "internal DNS server problems" have meant that Microsoft staff haven't been able to get to numerous sites from the company's internal network.
One by one, the penguins steal my sanity. X-)

I can confirm these problems, I have been trying to update my XP since a clean install on Saturday, everyday, several times each day.
It gets to download and then bombs.
All OK! now, Tuesday 1600 GMT Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!
