I cannot access the active directory on win 2k server, it gives the error 'logon attempt failed.

LesNicholls,

We need more information...Can you give the full error message along with a brief description of how your network is setup?

Thanks,

Patty [ponytails2]

Sure.. We have a windows 2000 server and win 2000 clients. No one can log on, it happened since we had a trojan virus which I have deleted but I think it brought something else in. On the Server in the registry was an entry as follows:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"WinVNC"="\"C:\\WINNT\\system32\\config\\com1\\servu\\remote\\vnsystask.exe\" -servicehelper"
"NetworkStartup"="net share IPC$ /delete /yes"
I have since deleted this, but no one can log onto the domain, also from the server I cannot open active directory, I get the message'naming information cannot be located because the logon attempt fasiled, caontact your administrator to verify your domain is configured properly and is currently on line. If I then right click the active dierctory users etc..and try to find the domain, it finds it from browes but then says 'windows cannot connect to the new domain because teh logon attempt failed.

check to see if your domain controller has been deactivated

I know this is thick but how can I check that?

my two cents...
I think if you run dcpromo from start-->run and you get a message saying: "This computer is an already Active Directory Domain Controller", then you should be ok.

I'm sure there is a better way of doing it. But this "seems" simple enough.

Hopefully it helps

Does your root drive contain these 2 files
script.bat
script.txt

DCPROMO says that the server is already an active directory server. I do not seem to have those 2 files tho

I found the answer to this one on the microsoft site. you have to alter the Gpttmpl.inf and a registry entry to restore security settings to default. Thanks for those who helped tho

LesNicholls, can you post the link where you found the answer? I am interested in case it ever happens to me as well as the causes for it.

Thanks
