I've been making a site that has loads of pages - all of which stem from a template.

This has been very useful up until now.

I'm wanting to add a background image to one particular cell to ALMOST every file that comes from the template (there are nearly 60), apart from 4.

I need to use the template to update these 4 files for everything else I'm doing, just not this one bit.

I've tried saving the 4 files as something else but they are still linked to my template and have the template-linked bits highlighted in yellow in the code.

Is there anything I can do that doesn't involve starting these pages from scratch & doing each one manually?

yes, save them as a new template- one in which the area you need is editable- it means you will need to change two templates- but thats quicker than changing 4 identical pages. Sometimes, when my code just won't behave, I take it outside and make it listen to britney spears music, and when it comes back it's really well behaved. I wonder if it's suffering from post tramatic stress syndrome now..
