How can I create a ufsdump of files with in a directory to a dump file? Tried ufs 0f test.dump /var/somedirectory/ , this creates test.dump of the entire filesystem /var :-(.

TIA

ufsdump is meant to be used to backup a complete partitian.
To backup the contents of a directore tar would be a better bet.

Agree that ufsdump is primarily for backups of whole filesystems but it can (and is, by us) also be used for partial ones. I wonder whether the / at the end of your /var/somedirectory is having any effect. Perhaps try leaving it off?

Mike & Ken

Thanks for responding. I tend to agree with Ken that though ufsdump is primarily for backing up entire file system, the man pages give me the feeling that one can use it for directories too, though I have not been successful in accomplishing the same. Correct me if I am wrong.

Ken I tried leaving leaving out the / at the end , that didn't help either. What is the syntax that you are using?

Appreciate the response and thanks

No problem. The exact command we use is:

ufsdump 0fuc /dev/rmt/0cbn /dpp/live03/system

which backs up just as described. We had to do it this way as we were running out of room on the tape! Cheers.

Hi All,

I have been successfully dumping directories (not the entire fs) using ufsdump for long.

For eg: to dump /etc directory only to tape :
#ufsdump 0uf /dev/rmt/0n /etc

now Wait patiently..!! The udsdump message looks like its dumping whole file system..but wait & let it proceed , actually it will backup only /etc. You will see the Size of data backedup.

Thanks for the post. It works and what really confused me was the messages from ufsdump at a glance appeared as if the entire file system dump is on , when in fact it was dumping only the specified directory or file .

Thanks
