hi I hope that someone can help me answer these two question. I am trying to get the fundamental on how it all work.

When is a datagram sent to a default router?
And how datagram is delivered over a single network?

A packet will be sent to the default router when it is determined that it resides on an external network. This is done by comparing the destination IP address/subnet mask pair with the local IP address/subnet mask pair.

I am not sure I quite understand what you are asking with the second question. If you could be a little more specific......

Anyway, hope that it helps. Let me know if you would like me to go into more detail.....

Thanks Erik, but I found the answer to my other question. Did a little research and foundout that

how datagram is delivered over a single network?
"To transfer an IP datagram over a single network, the sender encapsulates the datagrams in a physical frame, maps the destinations IP addresss into a physical address, and then uses the network Hardward to deliver it. Antoher way of thinking about it is that the transmissin of an IP datagram between two machines on a singles physical network does not involve routers. The sender encapsulates the datagrams in a physical frame, binds the destinations IP Address to a physical address, and send the resulting frame directly to the destination."

Now that I have an Idea of how IP data works, can you or anyone tell me how the 3 characteristic of IP work?

a. Application Services
b. Reliable Transport Services
c. Connectionless Packet Delivery Service
