Two PCs Can't print through Data Switch

HI folks

I have two PCs connected to an HP 2200dn Printer by means of Data cables and a switch(auto switch). Both PCs have windows 98 installed. I have installed printer drivers on both machine but still dont know why i can't print. it displays a message saying "There is a problem in printing.. check your cable .. etc etc".

can any body help

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

If the switch is ok It should print provided,

1. Your printer ports are ok.
2. Cables are ok.

To eleminate doubt, try printing directly using 1pc 1 printer. If this is ok then printer is ok.

data cables connected between switch and CPU should be 1-1 that is pin 1 conneted to pin 1 and pin2 to pin2 likewise upto 25. and The cable between swith and printer would be normal one.

Also checjout if yr printer ports are Bitronics i.e. 2 way data communication. Some switch do require this kind of printer ports.

An advise:
In stead of using data switch you can install 2 nic cards in PC and a UTP cross cable and attach printer to 1 pc and share it. Thus you can share all resources of both the PC. One drawback of this is that the PC where printer is aattached should be always ON.
