Hi --- I asked this question a long time a go, I did it no probs but should have wrote it down cos now forgot. I thought it might have been in my threads but its not there.

I have 2 operating systems on each partition. I want the second one in line to become the first one. So that it will boot after 30 seconds. Actualy 10 secs would be beter. How do I change both the choice and the time dwell.

Thank you.

Mel

Right click My Computer, Click Properties, Advanced, Under Statup and Recovery click Settings, Click Edit
Timeout=30 change to =10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS

Do you mean the XP boot loader gives you 2 options? (eg, 2 versions of XP or XP and 2k)? If so, you just need to edit boot.ini - system properties, advanced tab, Startup and Recovery settings button, edit button.

Below is example for currently defaulting to XP after 1 second with 2k as second option.

[boot loader]
timeout=1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

To make 2k default after 10 seconds, edit it to look like this:-

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin

Boot to the XP choice, and then under XP:

. right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced tab, Startup and Recovery, and click the Edit key in the top box to adjust the boot.ini file;;

-or-

Start, Run msconfig
Click on the Boot.ini file, and you can edit the settings from there.

(for the desperate, I have found a DOS-based editor for this crucial file. Very cool: Download the utility "EDITBini")

Thank you guys - - I have definately wrote it down this time.
