Two Nic, two networks, one system

We are try to improve our network internet speed but still use the old system for e-mails and thick client to the state. we can get this to work. the problem is we have to enter the IP ever time the system is restartedwhat are we doing wrong.
WinXP
Novell e-mail network
NT internet side

any help would be great
