Anyone know of a good site I can go to so I can learn about manually increasing the performance of my system (obviously Win2k)? Basically how to tweak it? I figure this will help me out in understanding my system better and I really have no reason not too, I keep all my critical files/projects backed up so nothings really holding me back, Thanks for your help in advance.

There are hundreds of sites out there that claim to be able to maximise the performance of your PC, but in truth, there are only so many tweaks that actually make a difference.

One is to fine-tune the services you are running.

Another is to optimise your BIOS settings - which requires a good knowledge of what the settings do and how they impact each other. This has little to do with Windows 2000, so you may want to skip this.

Adjusting virtual memory and file caching is a good area to investigate - I say investigate, because there are a number of theories, but in practice, it's down to what works best for you.

Optimising display settings is a good way to enhance performance - and the simplest and least far-reaching. Simply put, any visual enhancements you switch off will have a positive impact on system performance.

Finally (although there are plenty of other minor tweaks), general system manintenance like regular defragmentation, clearing out of temporary files and suchlike will make the system run far smoother and more reliably than any number of "amazing" registry hacks.

is a massive resource of performance and security enhancements, and is the only site I'm aware of that comprehesively covers Windows 2000 (and XP) services.

I also like the forums and articles on - you generally get solid technical advice, not "whiz-bang" stuff like you get on, for example, (which has recently changed its name to gamespot.com) - I'm sure it is great for the people who use it, it's just not my sort of site... :)

Of course, for specific questions, you can't really do better than ::)

I had the same issue on my computer when I installed windows2000 onto it. I did a few things which have inproved its performance and stability...

1. Optimise the virtual memory so that if a fixed size and windows wont have to keep resizing it.
2. Divide explorer into seperate process as it is the shell for windows.
3. Enable DMA for all IDE devices to save process time.

A website which goes through most of this is...

Also try this website for how to change the windows 2000 boot logo should you get bored of the "happy" microsoft one.

Enjoy!
