turning patterns into swatches

I have over 400 vector patterns done in illustrator. Is there a way to make them into swatches that can be added to the swatch palette in illustrator?

...not likely...

...manually define bounding pattern area and drag and drop...

...to slightly ease the pain you might be able to set up an action to do some of the work, but not all of it...
