Does anyone know whether it is possible to turn off XP profiles.

Thanks

Define "Turn off". In short, the answer is no. Are you looking to log in automatically - without the welcome screen? If the answer is yes, advise wether you have home or pro.

Hi Thanks for the reply.

A friend of mine supports XP PC's at a school. He wants to shut off profiles because the amount of different students using them they could end up with hundreds. Ideally he wants to be able to boot up straight into the screen.

Thanks

OK, you will still need one user account - call it student or something. That way, it can be limited by the administrator (to keep people from messing with stuff they shouldn't be).

By default when setting up the machine, if there is only 1 user account with no password, XP will boot directly to the desktop. I'm not sure if this will be true after the fact (removing accounts to get down to one user). If not, post the conditions and wether home or pro & someone will get you through it.

If its a domain, users are going to get a logon box, whatever. You could get them all to use the same domain user, so all logons will create only one profile on each machine (this presumes saving individual user data is not an issue - which it usually is at a school). I'm not an expert on w2k server - but think there may be option to remove network profiles when network user logs off local machine (so could all have different logons - could give them each small area on server for saving personal data - and profiles would not proliferate on local machine - but I'd post on win2k server forum for advice on this).
