I do not use WLM thusfore I would like to disconnect it completely from opening up. Delete it completely if possible.

I tried both links, and found "NO" MLM in my service dropdown selection.

Hi,
On my XP it is listed as Messenger, but on my Vista ( Home Premium) it is not listed at all and a search takes me to the Windows Live site where I can download and Install it.

So, maybe you do not have it, so no need to get rid of it.

Is it actually opening up on your system?

Well in that case, is there a way that I can STOP IT FROM OPENING UP.
If I read what you are saying, it is not installed on my PC yet, only asking me to open MLM so it can install itself!

Hi,
Does that happen when you are checking your mail (with what program?) or at random?
Have to joined or registered with Windows Live? ( the messenger is part of that system)

Are you sure you're seeing Windows Live Messenger? If so, how do you know it? Do you see a screen that says "Windows Live Messenger", or do you see some process that you THINK is Windows Live Messenger? Be sure to check on what the service/process is that's running. Or tell us the details.

Is it WLM.exe in processes, perhaps? If so, then according to this reference, that's a wireless lan monitor, not Windows Live Messenger.

If that isn't it, but something else, tell us more detail as to what is going on.

You can disable startup items by using MsConfig. Take a look there under startup items and services, and see if disabling anything there gets your problem solved.

To Turkbear: No, upon startup only. The WLM screen will ask me to log in, and I close then I r/c on the little man in the task bar and select exit. This turns it off until next time I reboot.

To kjb1611: I a using a wifi hookup since that is what our town uses. No, I am not from the hills of W.VA [ha] but still, it is asking me to log on to WLM. I have done as you suggested and that is using the MSCONFIG. There I have turned it off on startup. Now I will reboot to see what happens.

This is just an annoyance that is all. You know when thing pop-up unexpectedly, they are somewhat annoying. ha

Yes, I know all too well. [smile] That's why I prefer to build my own or at least do a fresh install of whatever OS I'm using, and then go from there whenever possible.

Do you have "Windows Live Essentials" in Programs and Features? Starting to uninstall that will give you the option to uninstall just WLM and/or other Windows Live Products.

If you do not want to uninstall WLM you can set its' Preferences so it doesn't launch at Startup. This is done via Tools/ Options/ Sign In.

Please do the followung and post the results... This is assuming you have Windows XP...

1) Click Start then Run then type msconfig and press enter
2) Go to the Startup tab and look for the service name "MsnMsgr". If it is indeed Windows LIVE Messenger, it will say "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background in the Command
3) To disable it from starting with Windows on startup, go ahead and uncheck it.
4) If you do not see the service above, look for a service called "msmsgs". If you see this one and do not see the one above, then you have MSN Messenger and not Windows Live Messenger. Either way, we can disable it from starting with Windows by unchecking it.
5) If you want to uninstall it, assuming you have Windows Live Messenger (the service listed in step 3), just go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it through Windows Live Essentials.
6) If you have MSN Messenger, you can uninstall it by going to Add/Remove Programs, then click Add/Remove Windows Components on teh left side, then uncheck MSN Messenger.

Hope this helps! Lots of good tips in this post should get this annoyance taken care of
