Is there a way to disable or turn off the built in speakers on a notebook computer?

You could try reading the manual. If you dont have one, you may be able to download one from the manufacturer. There may be an option in the BIOS or in the driver or in the control panel for the integrated sound.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

I would guess either in the BIOS, or more likely an entry in the Device Manager (could be in a any one of quite a few sections) - if you find something like 'integrated speakers' or something similar, disable it.

Otherwise, turn the volume down/mute the PC.

If you're trying to use external speakers, use the microphone socket rather than the Line Out (this will mute the integrated speakers)

I know that was a misprint but use the speaker outlet not the microphone outlet.

Yes, sorry, the Headphones socket (not the microphone socket, that would be silly :p)

Oh, and while we're on the subject, is the only difference between a Headphone and Line Out Socket that a Headphone socket mutes speakers?

Line out can, but does not always, have different levels. line out as I remember it used to be 1v pp.
