I am very new to TSM (two days).
One of the netware servers backed up using TSM no longer exist.(its dead dead and will not be coming back)

I can still access the tape library and can see the tape containing the data I want (q cont <tape name>)

Is it possible to restore data for the decommissioned server from the tape to another server?

Many thanks

Yes.. when you get the new server, if you ever want to restore you can try using "virtualnodename <node_name>" and "password <tsm_node_password>" in the dsm.opt.

Everything between the "< >" would be the real node name and password for that node in tsm...

Many thanks for the quick reply.
I do have one netware server up and running with the TSM client installed.

So all I have to do is add the virtualnodename to the dsm.opt and then restart the agent. Correct?

One thing what is the password for the client, how do I find it? I can see a parameter called PASSWORDACCESS in the exiting dsm.opt file; is this different?

Again many thanks

the TSM password will be the one on the TSM node that was used when backing up the original real server. If you don't know what the password is then you can reset it in TSM -

upd node <node_name> <new_pw>

Many thanks for your help with this. I am amost there.

I'm using the restore GUI to perform the restore.

When I enter the virtualnodename in the dms.opt I can change to the server(the dead server)I wish to restore using the "Access another Node" option. I can select the files I wish to restore (fantastic) but I cannot restore to the original location (as the server is dead) but when I change location I cannot see any volumes on the netware server (the netware server which is up and running).

Any ideas who I can do this? (I hope I explained this clearly)

Again many thanks for taking the time to assist.

ProbablyDown!

I got it! many thanks for your help.
I'm not 100% sure how I did it (initially I could not see volumes on the remaining netware server but all of a sudden up popped sys); but I can now view data backed up for the dead server and restore it to the last remaining netware server.
Thanks to the virtualnodename and to you!

Great! Good Job.... We do that all the time here... Unfortunately some people like to use TSM as a data migration tool - so we do the same thing..

Anyhow... glad you can see your data.. take care..
