I'm currently running XP Pro on my notebook and want to remove it and do a clean install of XP Home (only because of a hardware problem).

Problem is, when I insert my XP Home cd that came with the notebook, Setup begins but doesn't allow me to choose my partition. I want to choose the partition to install Windows on (my smallest partition, C) but it keeps trying to install to D.

When I insert the cd within my current Windows installation I'm told Setup can't run because it contains an older version of Windows, so I have to boot straight off the cd.

Can anyone tell me how to tell Windows where to reinstall?

You would have to prepare your installation to C drive by first reformatting that partition before installing Home to it. If you want to save your files and settings from Pro you can use the following article.

293118 - HOW TO: Use Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP

HOW TO: Partition and Format a Hard Disk in Windows XP (Q313348)

Read the paragraph,
"How to Partition and Format Your Hard Disk by Using Windows XP Setup."

The secret is that you must boot from your Home CD and not run it from within Pro.

Alternatively you might like to try and stay with Pro by discussing any problems and seeking solutions.
