I'm trying to install a USB 2.0 card into a Dell Optiplex GS 5200M running BIOS A03, the system is running windows 98. The system doesn't currently have a USB card installed.

The driver install fails because the VIA USB 1.1 Host Controller cannot be found. The solution seems to be to enable the USB Host Controller in the BIOS. But The A03 BIOS doesn't have such a facility.

Do I need to update the BIOS?

Does the motherboard have built-in USB ports? I'm guessing it doesn't so a BIOS update wouldn't have support. What I've found on the 'net shows the computer as a Solaris workstation, may be limited in what it can do.

There are no built-in USB ports on the motherboard.

Does this mean the system can't support USB?

The PCI USB 2.0 card should be installable on its own. If the chipset on the motherboard is VIA you may have to get the VIA 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 support file and install it first to give Windows basic USB support. The drivers usually came on a CD with the motherboard or in Dell's case on their CD.

Thanks for the information so for.

Having read the info on the vaiarena.com link, I think I need the older version of 4-in-1 support.

How can I tell if the chipset on the motherboard is VIA?
