I have been trying to compress Excel files that are aproximatley 5MB in size with the built in file compression in Windows XP. The files will show as being compressed;however, when viewing the the contents of the zipped folders they appear empty, and will not extract. Is there an issue with trying to compress large excel files using built compression with Windows XP? Do I need to use a third party compression utiliy instead?

If the workbooks are locked with (workbook protection) passwords, then all compressing is canceled by default.

Same thing goes for trying to ZIP a file with (workbook protection) passwords.

If I may, what do you think is causing the size of the file? (BTW 5 MB is not very large, unless you have email/firewall restrictions).

Software: XL2002 on Win2K
Humanware: Older than dirt
