Trying to Boot From CDROM Problem!!

I have a Ultra 220R that I need to reinstall the 2.8 on. I put the CD in the drive and type "boot cdrom". The system reboots and then I get a message that says "can't open boot device". I did a probe-scsi and it see it. I tried to boot using the long alias name but nothing.

I let the system boot to disk and then try to access the Cdrom and It is not mounted or something because i cant get to it. I cant even eject either by the button on the drive or by typing "eject cdrom".

Any help here would be appreciated.

When you let the system boot to disk, did you use the -r (reconfigure) option, ie boot -r from the OK prompt? That should pick up the CD drive on it's way up. Alternatively you could try devfsadm -C to clear any dev or device links that have got messed up, followed by a devfsadm -c disk to rebuild them. Let us know how you get on or whether I've got the wrong end of the stick.

I see three possible faults:

1) Hardware does not support this version of Solaris 8
-> try another HW Release or test it with Solaris 9
2) CD is scratched, etc
-> try another CD (there is a "Install CD" and a "Software 1 of 2", both should work)
3) OBP settings: some OBP settings can prevent a system to boot
-> reset OBP to factory defaults: connect a Sun Keyboard, press STOP an N, ask a colleage to switch on the host, wait for the message "Stop-N pressed resetting to factory defaults" (or something similar), RELEASE Stop and N after this message, try another "boot cdrom - install"

Hello

I had the same problem.
Sun SPARC is very funny about the condition of the CD you use.
A windows cd can be flithy but still useable.

A SUN cd must be cleaner than clear.

Try a different cd and let us know what happens.

I replaced the CD with the original and tried to reboot, didnt work.

I looked at the devalias and that looks fine:
cdrom /pci@1f,4000/scsi@6,1:f

I did the setdefaults command.

I did the devfsadm -c disk.

I did boot -- -r.

I did boot cdrom -install.

All the above commands were performed and nothing seemed to work. I do notice that the cdrom drive is not mounted in the OS, so i cant open the cd drive by doing an eject i have to use the paper clip to open the drive.

Any other suggestions???

I add a 4) faulty cdrom drive
-> can you mount the cdrom when you booted your host from HD?

Hey Franz,

I did set the settings back to factoryu on the OBP and I could mount the cdrom while in the CDE either.

I called SUN Support and they said that it was a BAD CDROM Drive. So they will be out here tomorrow to replace it.

I will let you all know if it fixes my problem or not.

Well,

OK, Here is resolution on my issue.

SUN Support came out today and swapped out the CD-Rom Drive with a new one. Guess what??? It works now!

I dont know if this is going to fix for everyone. But if this happens to you and you do all the right troubleshooting steps and it still doesnt work, try replacing the drive itself.

Thanks to all the people who gave me excellent suggestions on how to troubleshoot my problem.

guessing Sun didn't change the CD manufacturer since I left service... ;-)
to be fair: CD drives are quite ok, I've seen other parts beeing even worse...
