I am sure this isn’t possible however.

Is it possible to have a trust relationship between a standalone Windows 2000 box and a Windows 2000 Domain. Also to have the same Windows 2000 standalone box also trusting a Windows NT4 domain. I know this is possible if I install AD on the standalone Windows 2000 box but I want to avoid this at all costs.

Very few resources on the Win2K standalone box do not want to over stretch it

How little is very few? If you don't have anyone logging into it or running apps from it, there shouldn't be much load on it aside from the base needs...connecting shares doesn't require much resources (aside from named pipes).
