Trust Problem across subnets

I have a 2000 Ad Domain and a NT4 Domain trusted.

2000 Domain is trusted to the NT4 domain because I have a data share on nt4 which I cannot move yet. As I start copying data from the NT4 share to a share on the 2000 domain after a varied period of time the connection state drops to offline and stops copying, then comes back up again. I cannot seem to be able to copy any data from the nt4 domain without this happening.

My 2000 domain is on a vpn using class c ip addressing and my nt4 domain is public on a class c.
Any ideas.
