Trunk ports and VTP

We have an existing Catalyst 2950, 12 port switch which currently has three VLANS. I am now wanting to connect this switch to another 2950, 24 port switch in another room and set up a trunk between them and use VTP over this trunk.

The thing is that when I connect the two switches and set the first switch up as a VTP server and the new switch as a VTP client, the VLAN's instantly get wiped from the first switch thus cutting eveyone off. I then have to disconnect the new switch and re-create the VLAN's on the first one.

So, is it the case that when you set up a new VTP domain, the slate is wiped clean and if I just set up the VLANs again on the VTP server then they should get pushed to the client.

Your assumption is correct , all adding and deleting of vlans is done by the SERVER , you cannot add or delete vlans on the CLIENT side . You do have to set your individual ports on the client side to what vlan you would like them in however . If its the server side that is getting wiped out then the client side higher vtp version number than server side , to fix this I believe you have to put the client into a diferent vtp domain temporarily then put it back to the one you want it and this will reset the vtp version .

I checked the books and it does not say clearly if a client with a higher revision number can update a server with a lower revision number. If a client can do that.. just reload the vtp client once (is a good thing to do anyway cause it clears or resets the revison number to 0) Make teh switch you want to vtp server. Then connect the switches.

Anyone know the answer to a client being able to send it's vlan information to a server? Would be weird since if the vtp server went down and got connected it would lose all it;s vlan information. (Maybe that is why cisco recommends having a couple of servers in the network)

I had another go this afternoon and it all worked fine. I just reconnected the client switch and set up the trunk port on the server and bingo, it worked. Not quite sure what happened the first time but it may well be something to do with the version number. Anyway, it's all working fine now.

If you have only two switches, I would run them both as servers. The server with the highest configuration number will overwrite the other vtp servers.
