What results do you get when you choose to boot to win98?

try the boot.ini file on the c: drive and rearange it to the win98 boot up.

not to sure if this is the win98 solution

If 98 boots ok when selected then editing the boot.ini file would be the solution. Windows XP writes to the MBR and placing the win98 boot disk in and booting, selecting option 3, at the A: prompt type fdisk /mbr this will clear the master boot record.

If you boot from a 98 boot floppy and run sys C: from the A: prompt, it should just boot 98 (restore the 98 boot sector).
Make sure msdos.sys file in root of c: is c. 1600 bytes large, not just a few bytes.
