I've got a PC I loaded with an education verion of Novell, just to play with.

I need to format the drive and put the computer to use.

Novell seems to have given the primary DOS partition a funny name with odd characters not on the keybaord, so I can't type them in when I try to delete using a W98 boot disk.

I used the 'label' program(from W98) to try to rename the volume, but it gives me an error saying it can't delete the old volume label.

Any suggestions?

Try formatting it giving it a label of your choice, then deleting it.

It worked.

It was so obvious, too.

I had to go through the fdisk stuff again, but it works now.

Thanks.

I see you've already corrected your situation. FWIW, I use a program called zapdisk that wipes ALL partitions from a boot disk. I've used it for fat16, fat32, NTFS and Linux partitions. You can do a search from any search engine to find it, and it's even a free download.
