Dear experts,

I bought an used Slot 1 motherboard put a PII 450 MHZ CPU
on it with 196MB SD-RAM and got during the boot process
(boot device=CDROM with XP CD in it) the following
message:

TRAP 0000006 ======EXCEPTION======

tr=0028 cr0=80000011 c2=00000000 cr3=00039000

Then I changed the boot device from CDROM to the
primary master disk (XP is there installed) but the
messages above didn't vanish.

Any idea how to correct my problem? Do I have a defect
IDE controller?

Many thanks for your help!

First, make sure that the CMOS battery reads at least 3 volts.
Then, clear CMOS either with a MB jumper, or by removing the CMOS battery for at least 30 minutes.
Then, go into BIOS, make sure that the IDE 1 controller is enabled, Autoselect is enabled to recognize the HD, and that the boot order has the HD listed before the CD-ROM and floppy drives.
Then, disconnect all drives except the hard drive, uninstall all cards except the video card, make sure all connections are secure and correct, and that the hard drive installed on the IDE 1 channel as Master.

If the HD is not recognized after doing the above, then connect it to a different power lead.
If no luck, install a different IDE cable for the HD.

If that does not work, then connect the floppy/CD-ROM drives, and place them before the HD in the BIOS boot order.
If the same problem happens, then the MB may be bad.
