I have a gif that I took from the web with a white background. I would like to remove it to use it on some web pages. I converted it to an rgb image by going to Image > Mode > RGB Color. I then went to File > Save for Web, selected each and every GIF option under Settings on the right-hand side, but the tranparency setting is grayed out. Why is this? The logo is in a circle shape, so I would like to remove the white background from the outside if that's doable.

I'm not a regular user of photoshop and find it difficult to use, but there has to be an easier way than some of the possible solutions that I have found.

Thanks,
Todd

First you need to create a new layer with a transparent background and place that layer beneath your current layer. Then select the Magic Wand tool and select the white background on your top layer, delete that. Now you can Save For Web and save your GIF with a transparent background.

...or use the magic eraser instead of wand/delete. Does it have to be set to 'indexed color'(vs RGB or whatever) to save as a .gif?
