Hi,

I would like to keep the names of my desktop icons visible but not have a background box behind that text with the Desktop Background colour such that these boxes obscure areas of the wallpaper on the desktop. Basically, I would like to have it look like the names have transparent backgrounds (like the icons already have) while sitting on top of the wallpaper. My cuurent desktop looks like the icons sit on top of the wallpaper but there are holes in the wallpaper to show the names of the icons sitting on the desktop background behind the wallpaper.

I tried going into the Registry Editor to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\[WindowMetrics], HKCU\Control Panel\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Appearance\[Schemes], HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors, etc. but could not figure out a direct way to achieve the look that I wanted. There may be some simple setting elsewhere but I searched help files and Microsoft's sites but was unable to find anything.

Can anyone out there suggest any ways to acomplish this?

Will it keep running in the backgroung or it just changes the background and that's it?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I also found out from another thread (that somehow wasn't returned in a search) that WatchCat does what I wanted by default. I already used W'Cat occassionally but now I will make it start automatically on login.

I think that I will still try DeskColor.exe though to see what it does.

Thanks again!

Thanks again for the information Wolluf.

Both DeskColor and WatchCat do exactly what I wanted.

An interesting thing about WatchCat is that its colour effects remain even after the application is closed and seem to continue until the machine is rebooted.

Glad to help - I also use Watchcat and have recommended it before for this purpose, so don't know if other thread was me too!

Hi wolluf,

Yes it was your response in the other thread. That thread was from a guy who was having trouble with his icon text showing up bold and italic.
