Hi all,

I have used a 128MB translation to backup data from a 8700. I backup the xln/os/security tar.gz files into the card. When I restore the 3 gz files to the new 8700, the license and config of the servers are able to go through but only all the translation are empty. Meaning no extensions, vectors, vdn are able to be ported out from this backup. Is totally blank. Any idea what steps I have missed out or is it possible to get the translation via any other method? Thanks a lot.

Hi,

If the backups are from the same software release as the new system you are trying to load them on, you should be able to restore them.
I usually do the configure server manually, and then load the license and authentication files, and then restore only the xln file. But that's me. You should be able to do a full restore.

If you have access to the linux shell you can check if the xln file was loaded.

Do a "ls -al /etc/opt/defty".

There should be several files, with two xln files (xln1 and xln2). If the file size of (both) these files is less than, say, a few hundred Kb's (depending on how much translations you have), chances are it didn't load them. If they are 0 Kb (or close to 0), it didn't load them for sure.

If there are xln* files with a size that should make you think it has data in them, did you do a "reset system 4" after you restored them, or a complete reset of the S8700?

If all looks well, and you did a reset system 4, and the software versions are the same, and you tried more than once, this is the time to panic and run around screaming in agony :)

Good luck.
