First of all i am totally new to this program. I can not get any transition to work. I drag a clip onto video 1 and then another directly after it. I then drag a transition between the two, it goes black and i drop it there. I get a message like the clip is not long enough with three options and i just choose the default one. i then press play and the video just plays the same. Am i missing something or doing it completely wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Mark

How long are the clips? They have to be long enough to allow the transition to overlap portions of each. Try choosing options other than the default also.

Each clip is about 3 minutes long.

Do you have to render the project before the effects happen? i woudn't of thought so.

thanks for the reply.

Yes you do have to render first, that would be your problem. You can just drag that render bar (yellow bar with arrows at the top of the timeline) so that it only covers those 2 clips with the transition and then preview it.

Actually I've heard version 6.5 has live previews but I don't have that version so I'm not sure. Anyone want to confirm or deny?

uggitt,

If you're using one of the canned transitions, you need to have one of your clips on V1a and the other on V1b.

Expand the video channel by twirling down the little triangle. Make sure that your two clips overlap for the duration of your desired transition. Note that there's a horizontal channel between the two clips. When you drag your transition to that area, it should automatically size itself to the overlap you provided. It sounds like you've put both clips on the same track.
