I have just bought a Win XP laptop and wish to transfer some Mpeg files (sizes varying from 120mb to 800mb) from my WIN98 desktop to the laptop. I do not have a DVD/CD writer on the desktop or a wireless LAN. How (bar uploading onto a webpage) can I transfer the data easily?

How about using a crossed (if you have no hub/switch) TP network cable -assuming you have network adaptors in both PCs...

Thinking about it, if the largest file is over 800m, it's not going to fit on a CD either. Wireless network is another option.

You could of course fork out for a 1Gb flash USB drive, but a crossover ethernet cable and 100Mbit cards would be cheaper.

jrbarnett,

I tried that ethernet cable route. Yes it is cheaper (bar far) but I can keep getting administration problems when I try to actually view the data on the desktop from the laptop. Do you know how to overcome this problem?

I think you have to enable File and Print share in the 98 from Network and install/use NetBEUI along with (not sure about this part)"Client for MS Networks" from Network in Control Panel or Right click Network Neighborhood on Desktop in 98....
not sure how to enable the XP end
here's links
also check out this for safety, when done, so you don't leave ports open for attack
